Cons: noisy, hoping the motor to raise and retract doesn't fail
"This is a retractable downdraft ventilation hood for our cooktop, replacing the same model that was previously there. The motor had failed to be able to raise the hood from the retracted position. The hood works well and has a sleek look in stainless steel. The adjustable fan allows infinite downdraft speed options, but the fan is rather noisy. The filters are easily removed and will be easily cleaned when that becomes necessary."
"We added this unit as a part of our kitchen remodel. We stripped the kitchen to the bones and rebuilt it. The unit has the internal blower which made it a good value. We had a wall to vent it through properly - but the directions were hard to understand. There is a pattern for the riser but what is described as the hole is not defined. I believe it is to be included in the hole for the cook top with the pattern to be used for granite/other counter top. We had to guess our way around configuring the unit and found an obscure document online that did not come with the unit which helped a bit. There is no direction for removing the top piece from the riser to install it. plus the motor seems to want to bring the top piece all the way to lowest position even though it shows that part of the riser housing is on top of the counter while part is beneath to secure it to the counter top. Confusing. Once in it is great."

Good pop-up vent...
Pros: reasonably high rise fairly powerful blower, fairly quiet seems well built
Cons: down-draft venting is not as effective as hoods
"Our kitchen layout made a standard vent-hood impractical. A pop-up vent was a good option. The original vent purchased about 6 years ago was never quite powerful enough, didn't rise high enough, and eventually failed. The Broan was purchased as a replacement, largely because it would fit without too many modifications to the cabinetry and duct-path, but also because it had a higher rise and a more powerful blower.
In an ideal world, I would have gotten this with the external blower (more powerful, and quieter because outside). But that would have required fairly extensive modifications, and would have cost a lot more.
In the end, if one needs a pop-up, down-draft vent, this is a good one. If there is room in your kitchen for a standard hood, you'll be happier if you go that route."

Not very effective
"The downdraft looks good, except for the sheet metal that's on top of the counter. The contractors swear that it's installed correctly, but it looks pretty poor and needs additional trim. It also doesn't do a very good job in what it's supposed to do, an external blower would have been better. My range is under a skylight so I mostly just open the skylight."
