good cooling but needs time
Posted:7/30/13
Pros: quiet good exhaust design easily moved
Cons: slow cooling
" We bought this for an apartment on the top floor of an old building with alot of south facing windows. The AC is intended to cool a large room (kitchen, living, dining room). The building has rules about window AC units (only allowing placement in certain windows), so we read the reviews and chose this unit.
We keep the shades low in the summer to try and reduce the heat load. We found that placing the unit in an area where there are few obstructions to air flow (like cabinets) is important. We do not use the option of the second hose (air intake from the outside), preferring to recirculate within the apartment. We connected the second hose and have it wrapped around the unit, resting on the floor, pointing towards the room. It is very easy to move around on the casters and comes with plenty of exhaust hose.
I have used some older generation, bucketless, portable AC units at work. This is MUCH quieter. Also, you do not feel any heat radiating from the unit's chassis or exhaust system. The compromise with most portable AC units is a somewhat reduced air circulation (CFM) compared with a window unit rated for the same BTUs.
Bottom line - we are pleased with this unit but will probably purchase a second unit to assist for the heat wave days of summer. It can do the job of cooling a space with a modest heat load, but it needs a little time. "

It actually works as an AC.
Posted:8/22/11
Pros: it cools quickly.
Cons: little loud
" I was very skeptical on purchasing the portable ac since I read too many review that portable doesn't work efficient as the regular wall AC. My mom has master bed(1,250 SF+). Portable AC alone worked great! We have purchased two AC and we love it! "

Perfect for the Job
Posted:8/1/11
Pros: well-made good design reliable easy installation
Cons: takes up a good bit of floor space
" This looks a little like Robbie the Robot, but it does the job. We have a large attic room that has always been unusable during the summer. The window is too small for a window AC, and we did not want to put a hole in a 12" brick wall. The portable AC seemed like the best solution. The product is very well made and well-designed with quality parts that fit precisely. The instructions are easy enough to follow. Installation took roughly one afternoon, probably because we have a narrow window that required a little modification. Once everything is put together, the AC is meant to remain in place. There are two flexible hoses which must be exhausted through the window. It is easy to operate and lives up to the advertising. It holds a steady temperature and is relatively quiet. A blue light shows when it is running--it made a good night light, but could easily be covered. The drain on the back is fairly easy to get to, but I had to find something that would fit under it when I drained it. I'm pleased with the quality and how well it works. We now have a comfortable room that we can use year-round for out of town guests. "

Works for Me
Posted:7/23/11
Pros: cools as needed. easy install.
Cons: heavy.
" Cools a medium sized bedroom with very high ceilings nicely. I was surprised that the unit is NOT the same BTU as listed in the ad @ AJ Madison. It is 9000+ not 10,000 as Stated. Disappointed but too dang hot to argue. Delivery men were tops and very polite. "

friederich portable

Pros: small window utilization
Cons: somewhat noisy when cooling but manageable.
" I was warned early on that portables are noisy. They are slightly noisier than in-window a/c's, but the trade-off in freeing up the window space in a small apt. with limited window space is remarkable. And you can turn off the compressor to reduce noise or just turn off the a/c once you have cooled the space. "
