Friedrich M18CF

The M18CF Ductless Split System features a new level of system flexibility and control at your fingertips with the Advanced Inverter Technology. Inverter Technology lets you reach the desired temperature FASTER, maintain it MORE ACCURATELY, and REDUCE energy costs. It eliminates the constant compressor start-ups/ shut-downs required to maintain the set temperature with traditional technology. It controls compressor rotation speed precisely and adjusts capacity to meet demand, which in turn reduces energy consumption.Inverter Technology allows each system to adjust capacity and cooling output to provide only the amount of cooling needed at a given time. For example, an 18,000 BTU/h system will operate even more efficiently as a 15,500 if that is all that's needed. All of the Friedrich ductless split systems exceed the new 13.0 SEER requirements. And, a full one-third of the models have super high ratings ranging from 16.5 to 19.0 SEER.Units are fully programmable, so setting and keeping the desired comfort level is a snap. Smart features like "Sleep Timer" and "Energy Saver" allow the user to program the unit for optimum energy savings. The continuous "Air Sweep" auto louvers gently distribute cool or warm air throughout the room.A new level of system flexibility and control is at your fingertips on Friedrich single and multi-zone systems. You'll have more options for optimum comfort, control and energy savings.Over 20 single, dual, tri- and quad-zone systems provide a wide range of heating and cooling options for even the toughest remodels, additions and improvements. The Friedrich ductless split systems have the advantages of a ducted installation without the high material and labor costs. Absolutely no ductwork is required, so most systems can be installed and running in a few hours.Residential/Commercial ApplicationsComputer rooms/ server roomsRoom additions/ renovationsHomes without ductworkKitchen and prep areas in restaurantsOffices in warehouse spaces or large retail buildingsOffices and buildings where security concerns prevent the installation of window units

Great Ductless System Posted: 7/4/09
Pros: cooling performance, quiet operation, inverter technology, efficiency, power failure restart
Cons: indoor unit mounting, skilled installation required

"I use my Friedrich M18CF to cool a room full of computers and other equipment. I performed all of the installation myself, including the evacuation of the lines and turn up of the system. Most people should refer this work to a professional installer, but I was pressed for time and had a hard time getting someone to take my money to do the work.

The unit performs superbly. It provides excellent cooling and very quiet operation. I'm especially impressed with the quietness of the outside unit. I can see why this would be an excellent choice for an urban setting where the noise of the outside unit might be disturbing to neighbors.

I continuously monitor the current draw of the system and am very impressed with how the inverter technology varies the compressor speed in response to cooling demand and outside temperature. No hard start/stop cycles, just a smooth curve of current draw as conditions change throughout the day.

The remote control is easy to use. The feature of automatic power failure restart is essential for a system that must operate continuously.

The mounting plate for the indoor unit could be better designed. The pattern of holes punched in the plate don't seem to be based on a common 16 inch stud wall. The plate could also be better designed to allow the indoor unit to swing further away from the wall to allow easier access to the refrigerant line connections during installation.

Mini Split - A perfect fit Posted: 6/30/09
Pros: very power efficient very low noise, 18k btu single zone easily cools 500 sqft 3 rooms, houston 100+ degree summer no match for this unit, simple installation with < 50' of tubing
Cons: price was slightly higher ($20) than other brands

"I did a good bit of internet research prior to purchasing this unit and was looking for a good SEER/EER performer that could do the job. 2 items that concerned me were the following. Not a lot of installers had experience with these systems in Houston and there were no customer reviews on this model or MFG. I have known of Friedrich for a long time, so I knew there were no fly by night company. The installation time was 1 day with 3 men (2 story install). The single zone unit is cooling 500 Sq ft, 3 room garage apartment very easily and amazingly efficiently. I was VERY impressed with the low noise. The multi-speed, inverter heat pump compressor is whisper quiet. The evaporator fan even on high is quiet. I highly recommend this unit. One contractor bid the job and tried to talk me into changing to a central system, glad I did not fall for the bait and switch."

Better than Expected Posted: 6/23/09
Pros: quiet great performance do it yourself install
Cons: installation requires a relatively large hole, requires service gages and vacuum pump for full, do it yourself installation

"Extremely Pleased. Outside and inside unit are nearly silent, on low they are silent. Performance is outstanding. I over-sized my unit slightly to use only the low settings to achieve the lowest noise levels. Installation is fairly simple; an 80mm hole in the wall was the biggest complication. Unit also required evacuation of the lines. I located inexpensive service gages and a low cost 2 stage vacuum pump for about $300 total and did it my self. The instructions walk you through it, or you will have to get a A/C technician. Some places will not want to work on a non professional installation. Look for smaller independent firms."

"This unit is everything it was presented to be. The technician that installed it thought something was wrong when he turned it on. He told me it was not running and he did not know why. Actually, it was running, that is how quiet it is. He said he never installed an AC unit that ran that quiet."
