Good basic machines
Posted:1/2/12
Pros: hot is really hot cold is really cold., no electronics good capacity they don't walk
Cons: noisy suds left behind on some cycles.
"We looked, and looked and looked for a traditional washer without all the electronics that seem to be failing on all the new stuff. We almost went to the GE, but they have always had such bad repair histories. The Whirlpool just seemed cheap and still had issues with the new temperature controls that everyone uses that won't allow you to have a true hot wash. Yuck.
So, we ended up with Speed Queen. No electronics. it's all mechanical. The downside on having straight water temps is that the cold is truly cold - I mean tap cold. Here in UT in the winter its frigid. The trade-off is that on the new machines "cold" is mixed with hot water to that it is more of a warm temp. Not with this. Because of the straight temps on this, the warm is more of the "cold" on the new machines since our tap water is so cold in the winter, so we end up with some pretty cold water that is supposed to be warm.
Now, the drain output on this is very strong. After installation (we took out an 8 yr old Maytag) I started having water/suds coming out of the stand-pipe. I had to re-plumb so that my water softener had it's own drain. The washer needs its own stand-pipe and you really do need to use the rubber end-piece that comes with it so that you don't get back-up. The rubber piece fits on the end of the drain pipe and creates a seal as well as holds it in place very nicely.
This new machine is stable as a rock - our old Maytag used to walk all over even after I would re-level it. It is noisier than I expected, but oh well. the only remaining issue my wife hasn't solved is the left over suds after a batch is through. We are using the same amount of detergent as before and we are also using the extra rinse.
Did I mention that the wash time on this is really short? Wow. And stuff still seems to come out clean.
We do have some beefs about the pre-wash. It doesn't work well at all since it drains out your soap and then goes into the normal wash - it's almost a joke to have it in my opinion. The pre-soak is also less than desireable. You will also have to be careful when choosing cycles - the lines on the dial that separate the cycles are so close that you can think you have chosen one cycle, but really be on another.
I think they could improve the functionality of the machine if they had some women talk to them that really use these things heavily.
Over all, considering the junk that is being sold right now in terms of the new water efficient stuff (front and top loaders) we would do this again. I have to say though, that if Maytag still made the model that we had just junked we would have gone back to it for functionality. They had it down and everything worked extremely well in terms of washing, pre-wash, pre-soak. It was just a piece of junk as far as quality goes. Very sad. So, this Speed Queen is the lesser of the evils out there in our opinion."

The machine for Soaking Clothes
Posted:6/16/11
Pros: manual water adjustment fast spin many fabric, care cycles reputation for reliability
Cons: loud old fashioned looking not a huge capacity
"I soak very dirty clothes overnight covered with water and Oxyclean. The options for full water coverage are shrinking due to energy awareness and water usage. These Speed Queens are old fashioned washers with few bells and whistles. I am counting on the brand's reputation for longevity, reliability and a good 3 year warranty to make up for the relatively high price and uninspired appearance of the machine. It developed a problem in transit which was quickly resolved under warranty. I was also a bit surprised at the capacity. I expected it to accept more clothes, but the water stops quite short of the top of the tub. The washer is also one of the loudest I have ever owned. Time will tell if I made the right decision in this purchase."

Great "throwback" washer
Posted:3/10/11
Pros: solid build quality & performance made in the usa
Cons: none
"Today's washers are all about features & technology. While good in theory, these consistently result in frequent repairs after only short periods of ownership. Combined with poor materials & build quality, this results in not having a basic item that every family needs. This machine is built to last, and has performed flawlessly for my family of four, including two teenage sons. The controls are solid mechanical dials, and give me all of the options I could want. The only flaw I can see (which is NOT the fault of Speed Queen) is the water level is lower than our previous washers, but this is due to the Fed regulations on water consumption. Nonetheless, it has performed perfectly with every load type I have thrown at it. Quality built in the USA - now that is something to get behind - and I'm glad we did. The numerous reviews we read prior to purchase were all consistent in their praise, and I'm here to add to that. Highly recommended.
I would also like to commend AJ Madison for great communication & fast delivery of this and the matching (ADE4BR) dryer to us all the way in CA. Thanks for a great experience.

DEFINATELY THE BEST TOP LOAD WASHING MACHINE MADE!
Posted:7/14/10
Pros: well built - sturdy gets the clothes clean, faily quiet vibration free
Cons: none
"We are very happy with our Speed Queen washing machine! Speed Queen makes excellent top quality products! We looked at all the other makes of washing machines and let me tell you they are nowhere as well made and designed as the Speed Queen. Speed Queen is the brand the other larger appliance makers do not want you to know about, it puts the competing brands of washers to shame! The Speed Queen is built rock solid, does a great job of getting the clothes clean, its handles even loads of throw carpets without ever going out of balance. The Speed Queen handles loads with ease that would have had our prior washer (a Maytag product) trashing and banging and hopping accross our laundry room.
If you prior purchased one of those other brands of washers, energy saver washers with auto water level systems that don't work, doors, lids that won't open, that does not get the clothes clean and breaks down often. Do yourself a favor throw that other brand of washer in the garbage and buy a Speed Queen washer, it will be the best thing you ever did!

Best Purchase Ever
Posted:6/23/09
"For months we looked for a good, basic, old-style washer with no electronic control panels or other "modern" features that usually break within the first year or two, and finally we found Speed Queen. We've been thrilled with the AWN542. It's solid, quiet, fast and performs magnificently. It also has the best warranty of any washer we looked at.
THANK YOU Alliance, for continuing to make quality Made in USA products!"
