The initial cost of a room air conditioning unit is significantly lower than the cost of central air. Because room air conditioners are designed for cooling small spaces, operating costs are reduced. And, room air conditioners can provide personalized temperature and humidity controls that central systems cannot.Calculating Cooling CapacityCooling capacity is the critical factor in properly selecting a room air conditioner. Cooling capacity is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and typical models will range in capacity from 5,000 BTUs to 28,500 BTUs.Choosing an undersized unit will overwork the unit and it will not cool properly. Choosing an oversized unit will cost more to buy and operate and it will not dehumidify properly. We can help you to calculate capacity. Multiply the length by the width to determine square footage or square meters. Locate the room size in the chart below to select the appropriate BTUs. "Haven't had much opportunity to use in this cool spring. It seems to work well. Not as quiet as I thought it would be, but it seems to be efficient."

Way too noisy!

"My wife and I are very dissapointed in this unit, it's supposed to replace a Consumer's reports top rated model and we find it to be almost earth shaking when the condenser kicks in. We can't sleep with it on in the room... DON'T BUY ONE!
You may think we really don't need one in Washington state anyway, but our bedroom is on the 2nd floor and gets way too warm to sleep in the summer.

Well done...

"This unit moves a tremendous amount of air for its size. At the same time, the noise from turbulence is completely acceptable. The last AC I purchased was a 10k BTU unit and it cost me [$]. I suppose with everything being made overseas these days, it's less expensive to build decent quality. BTW, I noticed the unit uses a Samsung compressor; not a detriment to the unit, just an observation."

"We needed a (bed) room AC to suppliment our new house's central AC/Heating unit. Consumer Reports said this model GE was the best in its class - 8,000 BTU. The unit (GE ASM08LK) works fine and we are very happy with it."

"A very decent air conditioner. Quite, good air flow, and the thermostat works properly. Have not had a chance to evaluate the energy saving. Very satisfied overall"

GE 8K Air Conditioner flops

"Loudest AC unit I have every heard! Also, the thermostat doesn't work properly, unit keeps cycling off and on too fast without cooling the room. Sounds like a freight train hitting a house when the compressor turns on. Impossible to sleep with this thing."
